The other night - Tuesday night, to be exact - Andrew held his first Dharma Punx meeting in a conference room at Tunxis Community College. Including the two of us, there were five people in attendance. Not too shabby, especially considering that some people were planning on going but couldn't make it (but are planning on making it next week). It's better than I'd ever have been able to set up. Andrew did an awesome job setting it up and teaching meditation (and the basic principles of Buddhism) to the people who came. But this post is not about that. We'll talk about his Dharma Punx meetings later.
This is about children.
It has been discussed many, many, many times between the two of us already - we both definitely want children. We talk about it a lot. We've even got a STAR WARS Yoda onesie for our first child. (We didn't buy it because that would be kind of creepy, buying clothing for your future children - Ann bought it for us as a couple for Christmas. She's the best!)
Tuesday night after the meeting Andrew started talking about children. I was too exhausted to really bring much to the conversation (I've started getting up at 5:20 in the morning for work, and trust me, I'm not a morning person) but from what I gathered, we're on the same page about the general issue. We both want two or three children - at least one boy and at least one girl. He's already got a name picked out for our firstborn son (he wants to name him after our fathers, which, while that's an honorable way to name a child, I'm not too keen on the idea). Oh well.
I'm not about to fret over it though - the point is, we're talking about it. We've got a long ways off before we actually have to start worrying about baby names (I hope... haha) but the fact that we're able to talk about it is good. It's awesome, even. Here's a list of children-related questions that you and your partner should think about:
- Do you want to have children?
- Do we want to have children?
- If we decide we do, have many children do you want to have?
- How long should we be married before having children?
- What kind of parent do you think you will be?
- What is your parenting philosophy?
- How do you feel about discipline, allowance and other issues?
- Will one of us stay home after we have children?
- Which parent will stay at home with the children? For how long?
- What type of birth control will we use if we want to postpone or prevent parenthood?
- How do you feel about adoption?
- Do you have any children already?
- Where will we spend holidays?
- Will we spend the holidays with friends and family or will they be private celebrations? Will we switch off what families or groups of friends we spend certain holidays with? Will this be yearly?
- Will we host parties? What kinds of parties or events will we host?
